About Mighty Mouse
Born in a litter of 6 to a beautiful Birman queen, the kittens looked to have a good start being normal weight. But within 24 hours, their mother had no milk and the kittens needed to be handraised. By the time he was 11 days old, barely hanging on to life, 2 of the kittens had died. He was the size of a mouse and weighed less than 100grams when he was a week old. His breeder struggled to hand feed the remaining 4 kittens without help, but it was an impossible task. She took him to the vet at 4 weeks to be put to sleep. But something about him persuaded the vet not to put him down. When I first encountered him, HE WOULDN'T STOP PURRING. In order to save the older 3 kittens, MM was destined to die - his luck had run out, and that's when I took him. It was his last chance and all the odds were against him. He weighed 210grams - which is about 7 ounces at 4.3 weeks and was mistaken at the vet's for an exotic Mouse. NOBODY expected him to live. But he had other ideas. Olliber, Olliber, you awake? we jus had bedtym stooryan ges wat, ges wat! Mumy Carole jus toll us dat Primrose int our reel cat Mum. Weeds jus cant beleeb it. LOLOL I hope that Ruby, Paisley, Oliver, D'arcy, Sophie, Akira and Selena will testify in our defence when we all get taken away to the funny farm. Love it! :-)
ReplyDeleteROLFLMHO In our defence it is pure escapism. We all know that these babies would chatter away if they could talk human talk. I must expain that poor Primrose is at her wits end with Deandra's babies. They are determined to keep nursing as long as possible and after raising two litters of kittens, 11 in total, she has had ENOUGH. She is a darling and truly saved the lives of these kittens, especailly Akira who was too tiny to have a catheta inserted for intravenous fluids. I was pushing through the fluids over 48 hours, every hour and Primrose was letting them suckle. Akira just has sub cut fluids twice a day and none of us thought she would survive. The mystery of this event and the other litter at Christmas who also nearly died, in fact I did lose one girl, was solved this week. The meat supplier I was using at the time had a freezer break down and rather than throw away the meat they refroze it! *!#!*!! I can't put in print what I think of them. They had to fess up because I had the girl autopsied and tests run to find the cause and it came back as bacteria from off meat causing Salmonella. Anyway Primrose is their Guardian Angel but she wants a rest after 5 weeks, lol.
ReplyDeleteThat is truly terrible about the meat! Will there be any further repercussions regarding the emat supplier. I am so sorry that the kittens suffered as a result but am glad that it's not something else (disease wise) that could have impacted on more of your cats. Poor Primrose. How much longer will the kittens need her? Are they Burmese or Burmillas?
ReplyDeleteThe kittens are Burmillas and Primrose has weaned them over the weekend, she just kept making herself 'unavailable'. They are 8 weeks old now so they really don't need her as they eat like a herd of small ponies, lol. Today she is back playing with them and snuggling up but she walks away if they try to suckle. Difficult to do anything about the meat supplier as they will deny it, I found out informally what had happened. I will call and speak to the manager to let him know the consequences of his penny pinching. The meat was probably Ok for adults as their gut is more tolerant (mine wouldn't eat it) but kittens are so vulnerable. Needless to say I don't use that meat supplier now.

ReplyDeleteCarole that's a shocking story about the meat supply. It could have had tragic consequences for all your cats.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately this isn't an uncommon occurance as there are very few checks and regulations for raw Pet food.
